Overview
BMW HVS 01/02 and SME 1/2 service workspace
SME Cell Restore brings gateway identification, battery-controller fault diagnostics and cell-data restoration into one Windows application. It is intended for supported BMW high-voltage vehicles using the HVS 01/02 / SME 1/2 architecture.
The listed release is 2.1.0. The available interface image, executable integrity reference and English operating-guide filename describe the earlier 2.0 build; they must not be treated as proof of the 2.1.0 binary contents.

SME Cell Restore 2.0 interface reference in Dark theme; the listed release is 2.1.0.
Key features
- Dedicated BMW HVS 01/02 / SME 1/2 workflow.
- ZGW discovery over the local IPv4 network.
- Gateway IP, complete vehicle VIN and connection status display.
- Separate reading of normal SME and shadow SME fault memory.
- Embedded SME fault-code catalogue containing approximately 950 entries.
- Normal and shadow fault-memory erasure, each followed by an automatic reread.
- Separate vehicle-wide Car DTC erase function.
- SME controller restart.
- TXT export of diagnostic fault lists.
- Guarded cell-data restoration with 29 displayed progress steps.
- Built-in retry branches, delays and reconnection handling.
- Controls that prevent cancellation or closing during the active write sequence.
- Time-ordered operation log and live operation-status display.
- Light and Dark themes.
- Computer-bound HWID licensing.
BMW compatibility
Vehicle eligibility depends on the actual HVS/SME architecture and the authorized repair workflow. A BMW model or chassis name alone does not establish compatibility. Confirm the full VIN, gateway destination, controller configuration and repair prerequisites for the specific vehicle.
Cell-data restoration is described for a repair case in which the physical work, HVS programming, coding, controller validation and any required authorization have already been completed, while the necessary cell data still requires restoration. No exhaustive model, chassis or controller-software list is documented.
ZGW gateway discovery and vehicle identity
Detect ZGW searches active local IPv4 interfaces for BMW gateway responses. Its results provide a gateway IP address, the reported 17-character VIN and gateway information. SME diagnostic and write functions require a selected gateway. The destination IP and entire VIN must correspond to the physical vehicle and current work order.
SME normal and shadow DTC diagnostics
The fault workspace provides Read DTC, Erase DTC, Read Shadow DTC, Erase Shadow DTC, Restart ECU and Save DTC list. Normal and shadow results are maintained separately, with the selected result shown in a shared list. TXT reports support before-and-after workshop documentation; the normal and shadow erase actions automatically read their respective memory again.
Vehicle-wide DTC erase
Car DTC erase has vehicle-wide scope, extending beyond the two SME fault-memory erase functions. Preserve diagnostic evidence before erasure and use this broader operation only where the applicable repair procedure requires it.
Guarded 29-step cell-data restoration
Write cells is the dedicated replacement cell-data transaction for the supported HVS 01/02 repair case. Documented safeguards include destination verification, an additional operator confirmation, 29 visible progress stages, retry handling, timed delays and reconnection logic. The application reports an explicit completion or failure result.
The transaction deliberately disables cancellation and closing until control is returned. Maintain a regulated workshop support supply, uninterrupted wired ENET communication and stable Windows computer power. Do not force-close the application, terminate it through Task Manager, restart Windows, remove power, disconnect ENET or cycle the ignition during an active write.
Transaction completion still requires normal and shadow SME fault-memory checks, vehicle functional testing and the approved BMW post-repair validation process. A progress bar reaching its end is not a substitute for that validation.
Scope and limitations
- No physical repair of cells or other high-voltage hardware.
- No repair of contactors, insulation defects, sensors, wiring or connectors.
- No BMW programming-plan calculation.
- No HVS 01/02 flashing or coding.
- No creation of NCD coding files.
- No issuing or bypassing BMW security authorization.
- No replacement for ISTA test plans or approved workshop instructions.
This utility is intended for qualified technicians carrying out authorized high-voltage service work. Vehicle identity, target gateway, architecture, repair completion, programming/coding state, necessary authorization and the supported power/communication setup remain prerequisites.
System requirements and preparation
- Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.
- Reliable wired BMW Ethernet/ENET connection and active IPv4 network adapter.
- Regulated workshop programming support supply.
- Continuous computer power, with sleep and hibernation prevented during the operation.
- Valid computer-bound
sme.liclicense file.
Competing diagnostic sessions, including active ISTA or E-Sys connections, conflicting VPN routes and other applications using the same endpoint can interfere with communication. Avoid competing sessions for the vehicle connection.
License and interface
Licensing is tied to the computer hardware identifier and uses sme.lic. The header shows the selected gateway status, licensed customer, license expiry and active theme. Light and Dark themes apply across the interface. A license-expiry value in an example image does not establish the terms of another installation; price and general license duration are not documented.
Operating guide
The documented English guide is named SME-Cell-Restore-2.0-User-Guide-EN.pdf. Its described coverage includes preparation, safety, gateway discovery, diagnostics, restoration, troubleshooting, recovery and post-write checks. This catalog overview does not replace the operating guide, and no PDF download is provided here.
Release 2.1.0 changes
The update identified as 2.1 revises the execution-progress display and adds warnings for ECU rejection or a missing write confirmation. The version listing identifies the release as 2.1.0. Exact software build/release dates are not independently established.
Earlier 2.0 executable integrity reference
The available integrity entry applies specifically to SME_Cell_Restore_2.0.exe, version 2.0:
