VOL-FCR - Volvo Fault Code Reader 1.03.0006

Legacy Windows diagnostics for supported pre-CAN Volvo vehicles, with fault-code reading and clearing, control-unit selection and selected service functions.

Overview

VOL-FCR is a legacy Windows diagnostic application for reading and clearing fault codes on supported Volvo vehicles and control units using pre-CAN architecture. The package includes the diagnostic program, installation files, a model/system-reference PDF and several generations of FTDI serial-interface drivers. Its scope is principally mid-1990s to early-2000s platforms with the control-unit selections shown below, rather than modern Volvo diagnostics.

VOL-FCR S/V 70 control-unit selection showing Motronic 4.4, MSA 15.7, Fenix 5.2, AW 50-42 transmissions, ABS, instruments, immobilizer and comfort-system functions.

Vehicle Coverage

Product coverage information and the bundled reference material describe these representative ranges:

  • Volvo 800 Series: from the mid-1990s onward.
  • C70: late-1990s applications.
  • S40 and V40: late-1990s through the turn of the century.
  • S70 and V70: late-1990s applications.
  • 900 Series, S90 and V90: from the mid-1990s onward.

Support depends on engine, market, model year and diagnostic socket. VOL-FCR targets older Volvo systems; it is not VIDA and does not establish support for later CAN-based platforms.

Control Systems Shown by the Program

  • Engine management: Motronic 4.4, MSA 15.7 and Fenix 5.2.
  • Automatic transmission: AW 50-42 Petrol and AW 50-42 TDI selections.
  • ABS and instruments.
  • Immobilizer generations 2 and 3.
  • SRS, ECC climate control and VGLA alarm/locking.
  • Service-light reset, cruise control, power seats and selected auxiliary-heater functions.

The supplied S/V 70 screen also shows RTI, separate left/right power-seat controls and Add Heater 912-D. A visible button is not proof that the corresponding system is installed or supported on every car. Verify the exact ECU, connector and vehicle configuration before selecting a function.

Required Interface and Connection

Use a compatible serial or USB-to-serial diagnostic lead. The supplied FTDI material includes virtual COM-port and direct-access components for different legacy Windows generations. Match the driver to both the operating system and the actual interface; third-party OEM hardware may require customized identifiers or settings.

Stabilize the computer and cable connection before following the application's ignition-position instruction. A generic ELM adapter should not be assumed compatible without independent documentation confirming it for VOL-FCR.

System Requirements

This is legacy Windows software. Original-era product references commonly specify Windows XP. The bundle includes older installation guides for Windows 98, 2000, ME and XP, alongside separate later x86/x64 FTDI driver packages. The presence of a driver package does not by itself confirm application compatibility with that Windows version. On a modern host, use a controlled compatibility virtual machine with safe USB pass-through or a dedicated offline laptop.

The main executable is documented as unsigned. Some bundled FTDI components carry signatures while older files do not. Package-preparation notes state that no executable or installer was launched; ECUDB has not independently executed or certified the package. No malware-clean claim is made.

Recommended Diagnostic Workflow

  1. Identify the exact Volvo model, year, engine, transmission and diagnostic connector.
  2. Install the correct interface driver and verify the assigned COM port.
  3. Connect with ignition off, then follow the program's ignition instructions.
  4. Select only a control unit or function actually fitted to the vehicle.
  5. Read and preserve fault codes before clearing them.
  6. Repair the underlying problem, clear codes and scan again.
  7. For service resets or configuration work, record the starting state and verify the result.

Package Cleanup and Contents

The documented cleaned archive retains the diagnostic application, setup CAB files, supported-car reference document, functional driver packages and offline driver-installation guides. Preparation notes describe excluding web shortcuts, a Windows thumbnail cache and an unrelated legacy compression installer. Nested FTDI driver ZIP archives were documented as fully tested and retained because they contain functional installation material.

Troubleshooting

For communication failures, check model coverage, socket type, ignition position, interface chipset, drivers, COM-port assignment and cable power. A COM port appearing in Windows does not prove that the cable implements the protocol VOL-FCR expects. If one ECU responds but another does not, verify that the second module is both fitted and supported for that production year.

For support, provide model, production year, engine, selected ECU, interface chipset, Windows version, COM port and the exact error. Keep VINs and customer information private.

Limitations and Safe Use

Clearing diagnostic codes does not fix the underlying fault. ABS, SRS, immobilizer and transmission functions can affect safety or security. Follow the applicable Volvo workshop procedure, service only vehicles you are authorized to work on, and preserve the fault-code report and original configuration before making changes.

Technical Compatibility

System Requirements

  • Legacy Windows application; original product references commonly specify Windows XP. Compatible serial or USB-to-serial diagnostic interface, correct FTDI VCP/direct-access driver and COM-port configuration, supported vehicle connector and stable cable power. Windows 98/2000/ME/XP guides and later x86/x64 driver packages are included, but driver inclusion alone does not establish application compatibility. For a modern computer, use a controlled compatibility VM with safe USB pass-through or a dedicated offline workshop laptop.
